I came across this article from the Guardian last week and thought I would share it with you as it echoes the same thing that we see here at achieve more on a regular basis.
The majority of clients who come to us for personal training talk about wanting to lose weight. Some do need to, but some are already a healthy weight and are not happy with the way they look. It’s our responsibility as trainers to ensure that we help our clients to achieve goals that are healthy and so we always work with people to understand how an improvement in fitness will help with in other ways. January is a popular and perfect time to set out the goals for the coming year. As with any goals, fitness goals will be specific to you. What’s going to work for one person won’t necessarily be right for you, so finding the most effective way to achieve your goals can be harder than it sounds.
People come to see us for a variety of reasons but many of those are related to weight loss. Generally people understand the basics of losing weight: burn more calories than you eat. However, if you’ve ever tried to lose weight, or indeed put on weight, you’ll know that in reality it’s more complicated than this. However, there are some basic components of weight loss that are always worth revisiting.
If you want to do better at something, whether it’s sport, fitness or losing weight then you need to work at it. Presumably that’s why we all talk about “training” to achieve our goals. But how often do we take a step back and consider exactly what we need to train, or work on, to get the improvements we want?
This will be a short blog as the message doesn’t need to be over-cooked. You will have heard it before, but to lose weight it’s critical that we learn to exercise portion control. Often people not only eat the wrong thing (such as hydrogenated fats and refined sugar) but they just eat too much. In fact, research shows that we have a habit of overestimating the amount of food we need by 25%.
